SmartCare Training Program Launched in Chicago

23rd April 2009
SCS launching Smart Care™ for optimising blade manufacturing at Windpower, Chicago May 4-7, 2009.

UK based Solent Composite Systems Ltd (SCS) will launch its SmartCare™ Training and Skills development program for rotor blade manufacturing at the AWEA WINDPOWER 2009 Exhibition and Conference in Chicago May 4th to 7th 2009. SCS booth number is 4324M on the UK Renewables Pavilion.

In today’s market where energy resources are increasingly critical, SCS has been playing a partnership role in Europe, assisting wind turbine manufacturers to reduce costs, and in so doing accelerate the attractiveness of wind energy as a sustainable energy source worldwide.

SCS has now formed a strategic alliance with the Consuta Composites Training Consortium (CTC) managed by Chris Little, who has been training people for blade manufacturing for over 10 years in Europe. Chris is Chair of the Education and Skills Council of the UK National Composites Network and is held in high esteem throughout the UK composites industry

In 2008, AWEA announced over 8,500 MW installed wind power provided 42% of all the new generating capacity added in the U.S. The new wind projects installed in 2008 represent an investment of $17 billion – the largest capital investment in the U.S. electricity sector that year. Hundreds of billions of dollars in investment – in wind project installations, wind turbine component manufacturing facilities, and transmission infrastructure to bring the new electricity to market – are poised to flow into the economy as wind power production ramps up …. and training needs accelerate.

At WINDPOWER 2009, SCS offers a wide ranging value proposition for the US wind industry from turbine blade design, moulds and prototype development to manufacturing technology transfer, coupled with SmartCare™ intensive training for new start-up blade manufacturing plants.

SCS offers wind turbine manufacturers “Smart” engineering features that make up its Smart Mould™ integrated approach for higher output and lower cost blade manufacturing. Smart Mould™ concepts rely on advanced composite materials, design, and technology with well controlled processes using skilled operators – an area where SCS has developed considerable expertise, over the last 15 years.

Use of the SmartMould™ system couples with SmartCare™ can significantly impact on driving down blade costs both in process and capital investment especially in high output blade plants, with reduction in waste and downtime.

The key to the SmartMould™ cost reduction principle lies in engineering techniques that significantly improve quality and productivity in the blade making process. This is largely related to reducing after finishing costs, which continues to be a major bottleneck in blade plants around the world.

SmartCare™ is already a feature of the SCS Rotor Blade Manufacturing System and this new alliance with CTC provides a strengthened ability to service the growing need in the USA, with so many new blade plants coming on stream.

Solent Composite Systems is a member of the British Plastics Federation, Composites Group, and Composites UK. It is also member of EWEA and associate of AWEA.

SCS has an Integrated Management System certified by DNV incorporating ISO 9001 Quality ISO 14001 Environmental and OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety.

CTC is consultant to the Sector Skills Council for Composites (COGENT) and a member of the Materials Knowledge Transfer Network. Chris Little is a Director of Composites UK.
